In 2013 I quit my day job to become a full-time blogger. The reason I was able to do this?
My name is Lisa Koivu and I’ve been blogging since 2009. I launched my shopping blog, ShopGirlDaily.com (formerly FantabulouslyFrugal.com), just as I was about to finish up grad school. I launched it as a hobby and for approximately two weeks it was something that filled the time that was previously spent writing my thesis. Among other topics, like waxing poetic about my love of Ebates, I was writing about sales at some of my favorite stores, like Old Navy and Target. Since I was writing about big stores, it only took about two weeks before I started wondering if there was a that I could make money on these posts.
It didn’t take me long to stumble upon affiliate marketing. Through affiliate marketing, I could add links from my favorite stores to my posts and get paid if anyone purchased anything without altering my content whatsoever.
I feature very few sponsored posts or traditional advertisements on my blogs because, to be frank, I don’t like the extra work that goes along with them. I’m a writer so I enjoy creating the content that I want to write when I want to write it. Because most of my income is generated through affiliate marketing, there is nobody telling me what to write or when to write it or needing to review a post before it goes live. Not only do I have full control over my content, but affiliate links rarely expire, so I’m still getting paid for posts that I wrote years ago. Over time, affiliate links can generate far more income than most bloggers are paid for a one-off sponsored post!
There isn’t a day that goes by that I’m not incredibly grateful that I get to do a job that I love every single day. I’m my own boss. I set my own hours. I work from home. I contribute money to our family while also caring for my son and our two dogs.
I feel like I am living the best of all worlds.
But – and this is a big BUT – it took a TON of work and long hours to get to this point. Blogging is hard work. Making money from your blog is really hard work.
Despite what you may see other places, there’s no easy way to start making money from your blog. There’s no one plan that works for everyone. If you launch your blog today you’re probably not going to make a million dollars in the next year.
I would love it if all of those things were true because it means I probably would be writing this from an exotic beach instead of from my couch. But I’m not going to feed you a bunch of lies in the hope that you will continue reading this site.
What I will do is show you how you can start making money from your blog.
I will share all of my tips and tricks and help you in any way possible… with the caveat being that you have to be willing to put in a lot of hard work. Anyone who has left their day job to become a full-time blogger will tell you that they worked their tails off to get to that point. I can’t take the work away from you, but I can provide guidance on how to monetize your blog, particularly through affiliate marketing.
I want to help you make money from your blog so that you, too, can become a full-time blogger.
- I’m not going to guarantee that will make a certain dollar amount. Anyone that guarantees you will make a certain amount of money by following any plan is not being truthful. The amount of money you make is based almost entirely on how much work you’re willing to put into the process and, to an extent, on the type of blog that you have. Thus, I’m not going to give you any dollar amounts that you’ll be making within six months. What I will do is give you all of the tools you need to be successful.
- I believe in honesty at all times. I’m not going to tell you I love something when I don’t. I’m not going to recommend anything that I wouldn’t personally use. That is not my style and it seriously boils my blood when I see people recommending products (like shoddy hosting services) simply to make a commission.
- I don’t believe in a one-system-fits-all way of blog monetization so I will cover everything from affiliate marketing to traditional ads to sponsored posts to monetizing your social media posts. In addition to that, I’m going to be sharing blogging and social media tips, because it’s only through consistent quality blogging – and building an audience – that you will begin to see monetary returns.
LET’S DO THIS
You CAN make money from your blog and I’m going to help you. I’m so excited for you to get started!
In addition to this site and ShopGirlDaily.com, where I write about things like stocking stuffers for men, I also run Foxpreneurs, where I help small business owners create engaging web presences. I have also written for U.S. News and World Report, About.com, the Chicago Tribune, and CBS Chicago.
As for my non-blogging life, I’m originally from the Detroit-area but I currently reside in the Chicago suburbs with my husband, son, daughter, and our two dogs, Bacon and Ginger. I enjoy traveling and am always up for a vacation. In fact, I spend most of my free time planning out the trips I would like to take, much to my husband’s chagrin. I have a major sweet tooth and love trying new desserts, reading, and watching Project Runway and Game of Thrones.
