GreenGeeks is the best green hosting provider | Oh, She Blogs!

Have you ever considered the environmental impact of your blog?

I can honestly say I hadn’t until recently.

In my mind, the internet is this giant nebulous thing that just exists, as if by magic. I turn on my computer, type a bunch of words into WordPress, and then hit publish. What happens after that, I have no idea.

Well, it turns out that it takes a ton of energy to keep the internet up and running. In fact, it turns out that the amount of energy needed to power the internet is just below that consumed by the aviation industry.

Say what?!

According to a report from Worldwatch Institute, “By 2020, McKinsey predicted IT would be the cause of 1.54 gigatons of greenhouse gases, or 3 percent of global emissions. If these calculations are accurate, the carbon footprint of IT would be comparable to that from aviation.”

I try to do my part to save the earth. We use cloth napkins at home and reusable grocery bags, among other things, but until recently I never once considered that my websites could actually be having a detrimental effect on the environment. It makes sense, though, when you stop and think about it. A lot of power goes into keeping the internet – including all of our websites – up and running and that power has to come from somewhere.

Thankfully, all is not lost. Green hosting exists, and if I had to guess, I’d say it’s only going to become more popular in the years to come. With websites consuming so much energy, it only makes sense that eco-friendly web hosts will become more mainstream.

Currently, though, one of my favorite green hosting sites is the very appropriately named GreenGeeks.

For every amount of energy that GreenGeeks uses, they purchase 3x that amount of wind energy credits. In other words, GreenGeeks is 300% powered by green energy and thanks to this program the websites hosted with them actually have a negative carbon footprint!

GreenGeeks is the best of the best when it comes to green web hosting. In fact, the company has been recognized as one of the Environmental Protection Agency’s Green Power Partners. This is a very select list of companies that are “helping to support the development of new renewable generation capacity nationwide while also helping to protect the environment.”

In addition to GreenGeeks being a rock star pioneer in the green web hosting movement, they’re also an awesome web host and one of the few I recommend. Not only will you feel good about hosting with Green Geeks because of their commitment to renewable energy, but they offer a lot of other perks, like:

GreenGeeks is easy to use

I’ve purchased hosting accounts and installed WordPress on quite a few different website hosting services. Some are definitely easier to use than others. GreenGeeks, I’m happy to say, is one of the easiest. You can literally install WordPress on a new blog within two minutes of paying for your GreenGeeks hosting.

I put together a video showing you just how easy it is to get set-up with GreenGeeks and show you how to install WordPress on your domain.

The video is 17 minutes long, but that’s just because I’m wordy. I kid you not – GreenGeeks is one of the easiest to set-up web hosting solutions I’ve encountered and I spend a little too long raving about it in the video.

Get a FREE domain for your first year

Every web host used to offer a free domain for your first year, but this is no longer the case. It’s awesome that GreenGeeks gives you a free domain name for a year because it gives you an opportunity to test out being self-hosted without the pressure to pay for one more thing.

GreenGeeks is budget-friendly

In addition to the free domain name from GreenGeeks, this green web host is otherwise super affordable. Prices start at $3.95 per month. Like most hosting solutions, the longer the term you commit to up front, the cheaper the cost.

GreenGeeks will migrate your site for free

If you’re already paying for hosting elsewhere, GreenGeeks will migrate your site to their servers for free! I frequently counsel bloggers to switch web hosting companies, and one of the biggest concerns we talk about is how difficult it is to switch your blog from one host to another. Honestly? I wouldn’t know because I’ve never done it myself. A good web host, like GreenGeeks, will migrate your site for free, which means you have one less thing to worry about.

99.9% service uptime

You know what sucks? When your website goes down. It might go out for 10 minutes one day and an hour the next day and five hours the following day. With some web hosting sites, and especially with some cheap hosting providers, it may seem like your site is down more than it’s up. That’s definitely not the case with GreenGeeks, however. You can’t get much better than 99.9% service uptime!

Unlimited domains on your account

The option for having unlimited domains on your account may not be too exciting if you only plan on having your one blog, but let’s say you decide to expand because there’s another topic you want to write about. Since GreenGeeks lets you have an unlimited number of domains on your account, you won’t have to worry about purchasing a new hosting account to house each of your domains. Your one hosting fee will cover all of your sites.

GreenGeeks offers green hosting

I know we already talked about how GreenGeeks is one of the only green hosting providers, but it bears repeating again how awesome this is. Considering just how much energy hosting solutions use, I am sure more hosting companies will move to an eco-friendly format like GreenGeeks in the future. If this is important to you, I recommend working with the company that already sees the environment as a priority and is doing its part to use fewer resources.

Around-the-clock tech support

I am a night owl and am usually up working on my sites after everyone else is in bed. This typically means that I discover things that are wrong in the middle of the night. Sometimes that can be a problem, but GreenGeeks offers around-the-clock tech support, so you’ll never be left hanging even if something goes wrong at 4 a.m.

Go with GreenGeeks for green hosting

You should choose to host with GreenGeeks if you want to minimize your carbon footprint. You should also choose to go with GreenGeeks if you’re looking for an affordable web hosting provider that offers all of the bells and whistles, including a free domain name.

Sometimes I do need that around the click tech support. Simply because I’m not a know it all though I do love this while aspect of affiliate marketing, blogging, content marketing and sharing content on Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, LinkedIn, and so on. I’m considering switching my dedicated server to another host. Any recommendations for an affordable dedicated web hosting provider that provides more than 1 IP address per dedicated hosting account?

Thanks so much, this was super helpful! Just used your blog and video to sign up for web hosting on GreenGeeks for my new eco-friendly business 🙂
